Alcoa has announced that its downstream engineering business is to be named Arconic once the company is split in two.
The new name is already a challenge on several fronts. Even writing this post, WordPress keeps changing the word Arconic into Arctic. Microsoft Word (and I guess many other software apps) also prefers Arctic to Arconic.
A quick check on Google reveals there is a software company called Arconics which focuses on airline safety, protocol documentation and compliance. An interesting juxtaposition with the Alcoa downstream division also focusing on aerospace. And let’s face it - none of us want faulty metal going into a 777. Will Arconic be making a buyout offer for Arconics?
There’s also an architectural firm in the Philippines called Arconic. Hmm - architects, engineered products - could there be an offer to buy this firm as well?
Finally, there’s also a website called Arconic, with a Texas address, which seems to be devoted to music or perhaps is owned by a radio DJ. It has the tag line, “Because we can’t sit still all day without going a little crazy…” Perhaps a good motto for the folks in the new Downstream division at Alcoa?
