Guess whose smelter this is

By: Stuart Ehrenreich | Comments: 0 | Category: Aluminium

We can’t publish the name of this smelter, but those of you who know your way around potrooms will want to look closely at this photo.

How many anode bars do you count?

For those of you who know aluminum but do not know your way around an aluminum smelter, if you look carefully at this photo, you will see a number of vertical bars lined along the side of the furnace. Count them up, then multiply by two to account for the equal number of bars on the other side of the pot. You will also be able to deduce that the furnace appears to be quite long, perhaps more than 20 metres. The pot also appears to be wider than normal, perhaps 5 metres wide.

Then talk to your aluminum smelting friends and ask them how many of these bars are supposed to be in a pot, and how long and wide a smelter cell usually is. By the way, tell your aluminum friends that this is an operating pot, not some R&D project. Note that the anode pins are varying heights, and there is some bath on the floor.

Those of you who read this blog regularly might be able to have a guess at which smelter this is. Send in your guesses via the comments option.

Here’s the photo again.

Where is this smelter?

Where is this smelter? And whose is it?
