China’s new petcoke rules - March 1 is here

By: Paul Adkins | Comments: 0 | Category: Petcoke

It was only 2 weeks ago everyone at TMS was getting excited about the news that something was happening on March 1. According to one rumour, China would be banning high sulphur petcoke imports from this date.

We tried to make it clear at that time that March 1 was nothing more than the day on which the new Industry Standard for petcoke would be released and would become effective. That was based on an announcement from China’s National Energy Administration (NEA). According to that announcement, on March 1 about 60 or 70 new energy industry standards would become effective.

So we weren’t expecting much, but nevertheless we made a point of checking every website, news item and industry expert to see what exactly would come out today. We wanted to be able to bring you the news as soon as it was available. If there was to be a change in how petcoke was going to be managed, we wanted you to have the news first.

And the news is - nothing. No press release, no announcement, no new page on a website. We checked Customs, EPA, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and the NEA. As at the time of writing (mid afternoon March 1) we have found not one morsel of news. We still cannot find the new Sinopec Classification Table for petcoke, even though it was approved in October.

No news is no news! But we are continuing to check and if anything pops up about changes to petcoke, we will let clients and subscribers know.
